For Foreign marriages Central Government to appoint Marriage Officers for Foreign Country



Foreign Marriage Act, 1969 provides for law governing marriages of a person who is an Indian citizen but is living in Foreign Country [or on a foreign ship, which is in the territorial waters outside of India], wants to marry an Indian or a foreigner there at the foreign land.

As per section 3 of Foreign Marriage Act, 1969 for such purpose the Central Government may appoint such of its diplomatic or consular officers as it may think fit as the Marriage Officers for any Foreign country.

For section 3, ‘diplomatic Officer’ mean an ambassador, envoy, minister, high commissioner, commissioner charged’ affairs or other diplomatic representative or a counselor or secretary of an embassy, legation or high commission.
